Heather’s Words

Have you ever stopped and wondered to yourself who you really work for? I had reason to find out due to my cancer diagnosis.

I’d been employed with Stevenswood for 2 years and was very happy in my role as the Credit Control Manager, although I did feel pretty washed out at the end of the day, I put it down to nothing other than age, but it wasn’t age, it was cervical cancer and I’d had it for some time. The scan showed a 6x4cm cancerous tumour with spread into my lymph nodes.

I had told Stevenswood and right from the start they were all there for me. After 3 months of aggressive chemotherapy and daily radiotherapy sessions which was as bad as they say it is, I kept my work advised on a regular basis; they were there every step of the journey with me. My colleagues ensured I was more than fully supported and encouraged me, listened to me, offered many support options and importantly, they showed they really cared. I always felt that they cared more about me and how I was feeling rather if I had logged in or not that day.

It was daunting setting off for the first day of treatment and of course it was during the March lockdown, so I had to do it all on my own. I didn’t feel alone though, not with Stevenswood alongside me, they took every bit of work pressure off me and wanted me to get the best from the treatment.

I wanted to write this piece for World Cancer Day to celebrate getting all clear and now being cancer free, the horrid tumour is gone! I have struggled to find the words to thank my Employer, so this is my chance to do that in this very small way. So, what’s the takeaway here? Do you know who you work for and if they would really be there for you when the chips are down? It was a terrifying way to find out, but I certainly know now! I cannot thank Stevenswood enough for how they helped get me through this, above and beyond what anyone could expect. For me, they have set the bar on how to support their people when they really need it. I will always be grateful and am back working and loving being part of this fantastic Company.
